The Barbados Electric Supply Corporation (BESC) was formed in 1909, following the passage of the Electric Light & Power Act by the Barbados House of Assembly in 1899 and its enactment in 1907.
In 1955, The Barbados Light & Power Co. Ltd. (BL&P) was formed to take over the local assets of the BESC. In 2011, Canadian company Emera owned 79.7% of Light & Power Holdings shares, thereby making it the largest single shareholder.
