General Information

The Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT) was established in 1946 when two associations - one for masters, and one for mistresses - in the 10 Government secondary schools in Barbados amalgamated to form the Association of Assistant Teachers in Secondary Schools.

BUT currently offers training workshops, seminars, and conferences on a regular basis to provide teachers with the opportunity to improve their skills and knowledge in areas such as special education, reading, classroom management and women's affairs.

The Union has an arrangement with Union College of New York whereby members can participate in an exchange programme. BUT members are offered one-year scholarships to complete master's programmes in areas such as reading, mathematics, science, and special education. Scholarships for 10 weeks are also offered.

We currently have a Student Leaders Congress whereby students from various

secondary schools plan programmes, discuss topical issues and current developments affecting them, visit shut-in members of the community and join in other social and welfare activities.
