SunPowerSales Searles Factory Christ Church Barbados
Sunpower Ltd., was conceived by Mr. Peter Hoyos in 1972. Mr.Hoyos is an engineer by profession who was seeking to lower his residential electricity bill and begun experimenting with building his own panels and using an old tank which he had purchased. This experimental system performed so well, Mr. Hoyos was able to turn off his electrical heater for 80% of the year.
In 1977 a builder requested Mr. Hoyos to build and install solar heaters for a set of apartments he was constructing. For four months Mr. Hoyos operated from his garage and from these humble beginnings the company has grown into the business it is today, employing 45 dedicated staff members and occupying 12,000 sq. ft. of space, which accommodates both offices and production areas at Searles Factory Yard.
In 1999, Henry & Susan Jordan joined the company as partners responsible for the day-to-day running of the company and the name Sunpower Limited was changed to Sunpower (1999) Ltd., as most people know it to day. Henry Jordan is the Sales Director, a position admirably suited to his years of experience as a former manager of a shipping company. Under his guidance, sales have grown at an unprecedented rate. Susan Jordan has taken up the responsibility for the accounts department and the overall running of the office. Her support of her husband and her contribution to the running of the company is invaluable.
Peter Hoyos still acts as a consultant to the company providing technical assistance when required. Sunpower continues to offer excellent customer service, making it no. 1 in after-sales and service and continually seeks to upgrade its plant and equipment. Sunpower joined with the BIDC to carry out a three-year technical assistance and developmental program, which is helping to stream line the production departments resulting in an overall increase of productivity.
In 2006 at the 36th National Industrial Awards hosted by the Barbados Investment and Development Corporation, Sunpower (1999) Ltd., was honoured to receive an award for “Contribution to the development of the solar heating sector”.
