University of The Bahamas: A Noble Legacy Established on the foundation of the former College of The Bahamas (COB), University of The Bahamas (UB) was chartered on 10th November 2016 and serves as key facilitator for national development. Our mission is to advance and expand access to higher education, promote academic freedom, drive national development and build character through teaching, learning, research, scholarship and service. The genesis of UB dates as far back as 1974 with the parliamentary act which brought its forerunner, the College of The Bahamas, into force. With the amalgamation of four institutions -- Bahamas Teachers College, San Salvador Teachers College, C.R. Walker Technical College and the Sixth Form Programme of The Government High School COB opened its doors in September 1975. In February 1977, when the then Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, Rt. Hon. Lynden O. Pindling, officially opened The College, he foreshadowed that the institution would eventually become the University of The Bahamas.
