The business is not a new kid on the block, it was started in 1948 by the Honourable Paul Geddes, the Geddes in Desnoes & Geddes. Their father, Roy Lafayette, officially took over ownership approximately 15 years ago.

Along with their father, the 'double' team wants to raise awareness of the business, which sells refrigeration and air conditioning equipment, and provides after-sale services for air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. They also supply parts.

Eight years ago, we decided to move it from a sales-oriented company to a service-oriented company because, when we look at the market, we realise that everyone is selling, but once a customer buys the product, it's hard to get the after-sales service that they require, said Dane Lafayette, the service manager.

At present, they employ 85 technicians across the island, who is trained to handle the problems of their customers quickly and professionally.

You can literally call me 24/7, Dane said. We want to create the impression that, when you call us, you're getting value for service and an overwhelming experience in dealing with a service company, he added.

Distinct roles

They may look similar outside, but the brothers assume distinct roles in the company. Dean Lafayette, is a director and marketing manager and Dane Lafayette, is a director/service manager.

Dean, who is four minutes younger than his brother, studied at the Douglas College in Vancouver, Canada, where he did computer science and the University of Technology where he did marketing and human resource management. Dane, studied at the University of Technology and has a double major in human resource management and international business.

One of the company's flagship products is the premium Mitsubishi inverter air-conditioners, which allows for energy efficient cooling. They were the first to introduce the technology 10 years ago.

It cuts your energy costs by 60 per cent, Dane sai d, and in a period when businesses are trying hard to reduce their energy costs, it's very relevant.

It's also eco-intelligent and reduces an organisation's carbon footprint, said Dean.

They offer a five-year warranty on the equipment.

As a part of their service, they offer their clients monthly or quarterly reports and free estimates for jobs.

They also provide commercial services to clients.

They provide services for organisations like the Bureau of Standards Jamaica and light to heavy commercial companies.

Both credit unions shared common values and strong commitment to their memb ers. The UWI Mona and Community Co-operative Credit Union were founded in 1954 by the staff of the University of the West Indies, Mona with only two shillings and were then called University Staff College Co-operative Credit Union. The primary purpose of the Credit Union was to afford housing solutions for its members in the surrounding communities of Mountain Terrace and Nannyville Housing Scheme. The credit union before the merger served employees, students and alumni of the University of the West Indies and the University of Technology as well as their relatives. Staff and students of other institutions within neighbouring communities, staff of businesses and residents, within the neighbouring communities and their relatives were also eligible for membership at UWI Mona and Community Co-operative Credit Union.

Originally known as the Association of Assistant Masters and Mistresses, AAMM was conceived in 1960 as a vehicle to assist teachers to gain access to credit facilities which were difficult to obtain from more traditional financial institutions. Like the UWI Mona Co-operative Credit Union, AAMM started from humble beginnings with only One Hundred and Sixty Eight pounds in share capital. Prior to the merger AAMM served teachers and their families.

Based on the similarities of both credit unions, combining their strengths give both the opportunity, to deliver stronger financial performance and offer a wider range of financial products to an expanded membership base.

The name EduCom which seeks to identify with persons in education and surrounding communities was submitted by an AAMM member.

Like UWI and AAMM, EduCom's objective will be to continue adding value through service integrity innovation and commitment to its members.

Our laboratory participated in a mock accreditation exercise in 2006, where we demonstrated our technical competence in providing quality and efficient services based on the International Standard ISO15189 requirements.
On May 28, 2013, the Laboratory was awarded Accreditation Status from the Jamaica National Agency for Accreditation (JANAAC) having met the required International Standard of ISO15189 that governs medical laboratories.

The laboratory utilises state of the art methods and cutting edge technology in order to provide our clients with the best service which includes a Laboratory Information System (LIS) for data management.

The House of Tranquillity Funeral Home Ltd. was established in 1995 and incorporated by the Registrar of Companies now the Companies Office of Jamaica on the 21st March 1995 .

The Company was founded by Joseph Michael and Opal Veronica Cornwall. At a very young age Joseph was interested in providing final care services for the deceased. It is with this in mind that he sought part-time employment with Madden’s Funeral Home. It was here where he learned both the Administrative and Mortuary Management Skills.

He has honed these skills through several courses in the United States of America and Puerto Rico, where he participated in Embalming and Operation of a Crematorium.

He was employed in the Government Service form 1972-1993. Until he opted for early retirement. While in the Government Service he excelled in all Educational Courses assigned to him. His favourites included Accounting, Systems and Procedures Management and Commercial Law.

He is no novice to the industry, as he co-founded the House of Serenity Funeral Home in 1982, which was placed under court liquidation in 1995.

He boasts over Forty (40) years of experience in the Funeral Industry. He is by no means selfish, having assisted former workers as well as Business Associates in starting their own Funeral home. The Company’s Mission Statement is “to provide Dignified Professional Services in a Modern State of the Art Facility at the most affordable cost.”

While the day to day operations at the House of Tranquillity is extremely arduous he still finds time to write letters to the Editor of both daily Gleaner and the Jamaica Observer on a wide range of topics affecting Jamaica and the World. He is also an event planner always managing to incorporate his love for Old hits Music and domino playing into all of his functions.

Michelle A. Cornwall shared her father’s aspiration to crea te the best Funeral Home in Jamaica. She subsequently joined her father in business upon completion of her Secondary studies at the Queen’s School. Having served in several administrative positions, she decided at the end of 2001 to enhance the Mortuary services offered by the House of Tranquillity.

Michelle enrolled in the prestigious American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service Incorporated in New York, U.S.A. in 2002 where she graduated in 2003. On her way to becoming a Certified Funeral Director Michelle created waves while at McAllister excelling in academics. She created history by becoming the first West Indian and Caribbean Student to receive the Mu Sigma Alpha Award, an award which is granted to the highest ranked Academic student.

She returned to Jamaica after completing her internship to settle into the new position as General Manager.

Joseph M. Cornwall Jr. attended the Jamaica House Basic School, Vaz Preparatory, St. George’s College and th e University of the West Indies.

He currently resides between New York and Boston and is employed to Jet Blue Airways. He has studied Photography, Video production and screen writing.

Joseph Jr. serves as Financial Advisor as well as a Marketing Consultant to the House of Tranquillity, through emails, conference calls and monthly visits, he monitors the company’s activities.

Biomedical Caledonia Medical Laboratory Limited is a private medical laboratory with a network of forty-one (41) collection centres island wide and has been providing comprehe nsive laboratory services since 1968.

The laboratory participates in external proficiency testing with the Caribbean Epidemiology Centre (CAREC), the Medical Laboratory Evaluation (MLE) programme provided by the American College of Physicians, Randox International Quality Assessment Scheme (RIQAS) and the Digital Proficiency Testing programme.

The laboratory was one of the selected Testing Laboratories to participate in the pilot Accreditation Programme that was orchestrated by the Government of Jamaica, Swedish Accreditation Body (SWEDAC), and the Caribbean Epidemiology Centre. Our laboratory participated in a mock accreditation exercise in 2006, where we demonstrated our technical competence in providing quality and efficient services based on the International Standard ISO15189 requirements.
On May 28, 2013, the Laboratory was awarded Accreditation Status from the Jamaica National Agency for Accreditation (JANAAC) having met the required International Standard of ISO15189 that governs medical laboratories.

The laboratory utilises state of the art methods and cutting edge technology in order to provide our clients with the best service which includes a Laboratory Information System (LIS) for data management.

In order to assure the quality of test results and satisfy our customers, the Biomedical Caledonia Medical Laboratory has established, implemented and will continuously maintain a quality system appropriate to the scope of our activities. The laboratory has put in place documented policies, systems, programmes, procedures and instructions for the maintenance of the quality system. The system’s documentation is implemented by the appropriate authorities and made available to all personnel in an easily understandable format.
