The NWC supplies 190 million gallons of potable water each day to its more than 400,000 registered accounts representing about 2 million persons across Jamaica. Within the las t five decades, the growth of the industrial sector added to the establishment of several new residential communities in various sections of St. Andrew, St. Catherine and many other parishes across Jamaica, has led to the increased demand for potable water.

Over the years, the NWC has increased its emphasis on customer service by increasing the number of customer service centres and payment facilities island wide, the modernization of commercial offices, the use of significantly enhanced information technology, and through training activities for various employees in customer relations. Efforts are also continuing to minimize complaints by customers in relation to the various areas of service delivery by the NWC.

In recognition of the need for further improvements in operations and service delivery, the National Water Commission has embarked on an ambitious Transformation Programme tied to the Vision of becoming the #1 water services utility in the Caribbean and Latin America by 2020 and in seeking to fulfil the Mission of contributing positively to national development by providing high quality potable water and sewerage services to residents and businesses through a competent and motivated team in a cost effective and sustainable manner.

The CMI is a dynamic ISO 9001:2008 certified institution and the Regions Centre of Excellence for tertiary maritime, logistics, engineering training, research and consultancy. It is a corporate body established under the Jamaica Maritime Institute’s (JMI) Act of 1992 and operates under the Ministry of Transport, Works and Housing. The institution is proactive in identifying the needs of the market (locally, regionally and internationally) and seeks to expand its programme offerings in “oepari pasu with the expansion of market demand.

The history and growth of the Institution over the years demonstrate an intimate connection with the needs of the international shipping industry. From just two programmes at its inauguration in 1980 and 30 students, the Institute has grown to become the tertiary centre of excellence in the region, offering over 16 programmes including Masters and Bachelor Degrees and a multiplicity of demand driven customized programmes.

In recognition of t he diversity of the technical and academic competencies within the Institute and in the interest of good governance and accountability, the CMI is organised into three Schools Marine and Professional studies, Academics and Advanced Skills.

The Marine and Professional School focuses on the core seafarers Standard of Training Certification and Watch Keeping Convention (STCW 95), IMO courses leading up to the level of captain, chief engineer and chief mate. The Academic School manages the Associate Degrees, Diplomas, Bachelors and Masters Degrees and spearheads general research based activities. The School of Advanced Skills concentrates on hands on competency based training to meet the needs of the growing shipping and logistics sectors including, alternative energy, engineering projects, business development, entrepreneurship and the Career Advancement Programme (CAP).

In an effort to ensure the highest standards of education and training within the three Schools, the CMI has adopted relevant quality assurance measures. The University Council of Jamaica (UCJ) provides the quality framework for the entire programme offerings of the School of Academic Studies. The offerings of the Marine and Professional Studies School are authorised by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). With a view to ensuring quality standards of training in the Advanced Studies School, National Council on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (NCTVET) accreditation status has been attained by the Institute. The accreditation of these programmes is one bench mark of excellence that the Institute upholds.

The foremost aim of the CMI is to alleviate local unemployment and exploit the world wide acute shortage of seafarers. Indeed the Maritime Industry Analyst, Drewry Shipping Consultants have estimated a worldwide shortage of 34,000 qualified officers, against a total requirement of 498,000. Moreover, based on Drewry’s fleet growth projections and the assumpti on that officer supply will only increase at the current rate, the report predicts that by 2012, the officer shortfall will have grown to 83,000. It is within this context that the continuity of education and training for seafarers up to the management level at the CMI is of utmost importance.

The potential for growth is tremendous in this dynamic industry, especially in the area of energy and in particular, its conservation. CMI has embarked on a number of energy based projects which are managed and executed through the Institute’s Renewable Energy and Productivity Centre under the School of Advanced Skills. These projects include, but are not limited to the assembly, installation and distribution of alternative energy equipment and water purification. They facilitate training, avenues of employment, entrepreneurship, certification, innovation, safety, discipline and environmental protection - tenets which are highly promoted by the Institute.

The first retail store was opened on Harbour Street with four members of staff selling only one sewing machine each day. The company has experienced significant growth since and today sells a wide range of ele ctronics, appliances, furniture and bedding in addition to its sewing machine line. At our Sewing Academy we have taught over 7,000 Jamaicans to sew. Through our sewing programmes many persons have been able to start their own dressmaking business, thus providing an income for their families. Singer Jamaica has assisted many Secondary Schools and Skills Development Centres island-wide by donating sewing machines to assist in their sewing programmes and has even provided specialized training in areas such as Garment construction, Machine Embroidery and Drapery Making to teenage children in Kingston and in rural Jamaica.Supporting Local Manufacturers

SINGER is committed to fostering the growth of Jamaican small manufacturers as is seen in our reliance on local furniture suppliers. Presently, 70% of our furniture are bought locally from over 30 suppliers who employ jointly approximately 400 Jamaicans. Our furniture manufacturers are encouraged to create new and appealing designs and work closely with our purchasing team and quality assurance personnel to constantly refine their product quality. Singer throughout the years has become known for its exceptional product offering in the local furniture product and our products can be seen in the homes of Jamaicans across the island.Assistance to Schools / Homes

The Mico University College (The Mico) is a tertiary education institution in Kingston, Jamaica. The focus of this institution is on teacher training, but it offers programmes in a variety of disciplines. The Mico provides diverse opportunities for the achievement of higher education through flexible and comprehensive Bachelor's, Master's, Post Diploma and Certificate programmes.

The Mico was founded in 1835 through the Lady Mico Charity, one of four teacher training institutions established during this period in the British colonies and the only one to survive to the present. The oldest teacher training institution in the Western Hemisphere and English-speaking world.

The Mico University College was established as a nondenominational Christian institution that caters both to male and female students. Over the years the institution has undergone expansion and development, both physically and in its academic programmes.

In the 1970's the Government started trainin t eachers for children with special needs, as well as funding for the training of teachers in these schools. Consequently, The Mico was selected by the Government as the college to offer this training. By the 1980s, The Mico was not only providing such teachers for schools in Jamaica, but for the entire Englishspeaking Caribbean.

In addition, through assistance from the Government of the Netherlands, the College established The Mico University College Diagnostic and Therapeutic Centre (the CARE Centre) to diagnose the learning challenges of multiple handicapped children and design individualised instructional techniques for these students. This Centre is the only one of its kind in the Commonwealth Caribbean and has gained international recognition.
