Over twenty years ago, the Meadowbrook congregation of the United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, envisaged the need for the acquisition of a burial site outside of the congested Kingston Metropolitan region. This vision was later embraced by the entire Untied Church and culminated in 1994 with the establishment of Meadowrest Memorial Gardens –a project which is owned and continues to be operated by the United Church.

The Gardens are located in the Red Pond/Frasers Content/Whittaker’s Mountain area, off the St. John’s road in St. Catherine on 55 acres of rolling countryside of natural beauty, in rustic but easily accessible terrane. The business office is approximately situated in the building which houses the Synod Administrative Office of the United Church at 12 Carlton Crescent, Kingston and in the same general compound as Webster Memorial United Church.

Available to persons of all denominations and the general public, the facilities include single and double vaults as well as urn vaults for the in-earth interment of ashes. A modern spacious chapel with a capacity of over 200 provides the option for persons interring the remains of loved ones in the Gardens of holding funeral/thanksgiving services in close proximity to the place of interment.

Meadowrest provides Internment Data Cards to bereaved families to assist in identifying the specific vaults in which loved ones are interred. There is in operation a referral service for the provision of Grief Counselling and a newsletter “The Caregiver” is published quarterly. In addition, the Annual Memorial Service held in the Chapel on the third Sunday in November and the Annual Funeral Directors’ Appreciation Function held in April each year are an integral part of the calendar of the Gardens.

Meadowrest Memorial Gardens has an unswerving commitment to:-
(a) Serve clients in a sensitive, caring and comforting setting through highly motivated professional personnel
(b) Develop and maintain the Gardens and related services at the highest possible standards
(c) Ensure viability of the project and integrity in all aspects of its operations in keeping with the tenets of the United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.

Caribbean Wesleyan College (CWC) is the most distinguished of its kind in the Caribbean and was established in 1996 after a merger of two Wesleyan Colleges in Jamaican and Bar bados. Our history spans many decades, and we are noted for providing trained Pastors, Ministry Workers and Scholars for the Wesleyan Church amongst other Holiness churches.

The CWC has made its mission to prepare students for holistic Christian services – witnessing, discipline and church governance, by exemplary biblical Wesleyan-Armenian doctrine and other academic disciplines. Our aim is to ensure that students, on departure of our institution, are capable of functioning as balanced Christian workers wherever they serve. They will seek to follow the will of the Lord, Jesus Christ and we guarantee they are grounded in biblical truth and are experienced Christians. All our students possess basic knowledge in the humanities and natural and social sciences. Our graduates understand and meet spiritual, legal and social requirements.

In the CWC environment, our students are trained alongside international staff and students. They preach, lead worship service and listen to others in your own chapel. They share meal times in comfortable dining facilities and their dormitories provide a restful haven.

The CWC make special exceptions to meet the varying needs of our students. We offer training opportunities for our mature students. You can take a single course whilst you decide on how you wish to proceed. You may audit a course, where you can attend the course but not sit the final exam (no credit), and you may do this with a short term intensive course (credit). There is access to financial aid and special payment plan. An online option exists for you to do some courses. If you wish to improve your CXC/CSEC grades, we can also help with this. For international students, the CWC will assist in obtaining the relevant documentation.

The Caribbean Wesleyan College is fully re gistered with the University Council of Jamaica (UCJ) and fully accredited by The Caribbean Evangelical Theological Association (CETA).

On Monday, September 15, 1958, Glenmuir High School welcomed its first batch of fifty-five (55) students. His Excellency, Sir Kenneth Blackburne, Governor of Jamaica, official ly declared the school opened, two weeks later. Known then as Glenmuir Co-educational High, the school was part of an extensive educational programme launched that year by the then Lord Bishop of Jamaica, the late Rt. Rev. Percival W. Gibson.

History records that Custos George W. Muirhead offered his property in Mocho, Clarendon, as a possible site for the school. Eventually the location of his May Pen home, situated on 25 acres of land, was made available at a cost of £13, 500. Robert DeRoux was entrusted with the task of making sure that ‘Muir ’ was forever immortalized in the name of the school.

This house provided classrooms, and the three staff members along with headmaster, Dr. Sydney Howard Scott, established the academic goal of preparing students for the General Certificate of Education at b oth levels.

In 1959, the school was recognized as a Government Grantaided one. With a generous grant from the Anglican Church to the tune of £20,000, and a further £10,000 from a society in England, and the tireless efforts of successive Boards of Governors, classrooms, science laboratories, home economic centre and woodwork shop were erected.

The decade of the sixties saw the establishment of the Parents Teachers ’ Association. Several illustrious educators also joined the Glenmuir family, including School Chaplain and Religious Instructor, Rev. Eric W. A. Dean in 1965.

By 1974, there were 29 teachers, including the Vice Principal, Mrs. D.V. Brown. Four years later, she left for the Principal post at Bishop Gibson, another Anglican high school and was succeeded at Glenmuir by Mrs. Zetilda Morgan.

When the foundation Principal retired after 25 years and handed over the baton to past student, Clement Radcliffe, the student population stood at 1091. With the a ssistance of Vice Principals, Marjorie Henry, Valsie Sommerville, Cynthia Bridge and Beryl Clarke, the high standards and ideals of the institution were kept intact. In July 2008, the school ’s population stood at 1459 students, 79 teachers, with Vice Principals, Mrs. Dahlia Bartley and Mrs. Karen Radcliffe. Of note too, is the unwavering contribution of past students who have made the continued development of their alma mater their life long ambition. For example there are currently thirty-four (34) past students on the teaching staff.

They, with board members, teaching, administrative and ancillary staff, parents, past students and well wishers, have pooled their energy and talents to ensure that Glenmuir will withstand the challenges to be faced in the next fifty years.
