The functions of the Corporation shall be to provide public broadcasting services of high quality to promote:

(a) the encouragement and propagation of positive values a nd attitudes within the society
(b) the development of education and training
(c) the dissemination of news, information and ideas on matters of general public interest
(d) the vitality of democratic institutions
(e) the protection of the environment
(f) the development of literary and artistic expression
(g) the development of culture, human resources and sports
(h) respect for fundamental rights and freedoms and the responsibilities of the individual to society
(i) integrity in public and private life.
Subject to the provisions of the Act, the Corporation shall have power to do all such things as are in its opinion necessary for or conducive to the proper discharge of its functions and, in particular but without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing, it shall have power:
(a) To erect, maintain and operate broadcasting transmitting relay and receiving stations
(b) To install and operate broadcasting distribution services
(c) To provide or to arrange for the provision and equipment of studios and other premises for broadcasting services
(d) To make arrangements for the production and distribution of programmes broadcast by the Corporation and to receive Programmes to be broadcast by the Corporation
(e) To do such things as are necessary or expedient for the purpose of turning to account any property or rights of the Corporation.

What is the Commission

The electronic media, broadcast radio and television, as well as subscriber television, have profound and wide-reaching effects on many aspects o f the daily lives of Jamaicans. The Broadcasting Commission’s role is to monitor and regulate these industries, balancing the interests of consumers, the industries and the creative community in implementing public policy and law.

The Commission is a statutory body established by the Broadcasting and Radio Re-Diffusion Amendment Act of 1986.

Prior to this, the broadcast media were monitored by the Broadcasting Authority, which was created by the Broadcasting and Radio Re-Diffusion Act of 1949. The Authority’s functions were incorporated into the Commission.

Who is the Commission

Members of the Commission are appointed by the Governor- General, after consultation with the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition. Commissioners are appointed to serve for five years.

Commissi oners meet monthly, or more regularly if necessary, to discuss and decide on matters relating to the Commission’s mandate.

The decisions of the Commission are carried out by a Secretariat, which is headed by an Executive Director.

The Creative Production and Training Centre (CPTC) - the Caribbean’s largest public sector multi-media and video production center – is a limited liability company incorpo rated under the Companies Act of Jamaica and established by the Government of Jamaica in 1984. Its mandate is to record, archive, and broadcast Jamaica’s varied cultural expressions and events, to ensure the preservation of our history, achievements and the promotion of our positive values. To maintain the highest standards in the production of Jamaican media content, the CPTC is committed to training the nation’s media technicians.

With over 30 years in media and production, we are proud of the high standards in media production set by the CPTC Productions team.

Our services which include electronic field productions (EFP), outside broadcast facilities, studio rental (the largest TV studio in the English Speaking Caribbean), post production, video productions, and multi-media services, are in great demand, due largely because of the professional service and expertise displayed by the team. We are always recruiting to help us cover events such as Magnum Kings and Queens, Rebel Salute, Contender, Sting, etc. and television shows such as: The Suzan Show, Love Zone, The Dwieght Peters Show, Impact, Flow’s Chatter Box and many more!

The CPTC was also designed and equipped in 1984 to train media professionals in the technical and production skills that would ensure world class standards in the local media industry. Through its signature courses in areas such as videography, audio engineering and voice and speech, graduates of the CPTC’s training arm Media Technology Institute (MTI) are in high demand in the local and regional media industry. MTI strives to constantly respond to the needs of its students and the media fraternity and corporate clients served.

The Institute is fully registered and recognized by the University Council of Jamaica (UCJ), the official accreditation body for tertiary education in Jamaica and is certified by NCTVET.
