Creole Day 2017
Jounen Kwéyòl or Creole Day will be observed on Saturday 28th October, 2017. The Day is a celebration of the African/French dialect widely spoken in St. Lucia.
The St Lucia Folk Research Centre (FRC) is the coordinator of the Jounen Kwéyòl celebrations that has been held annually since 1984.
The celebrations are held in four chosen communities each year. For 2017, the communities are, Babonneau, Vieux-Fort, La Ressource, and Marigot.
Throughout the month of October which is Arts and Creole Heritage Month, activities will be held by the four host communities. The planned activities include:
- Icon Series
- Lawenn Kwéyòl pageant
- Jennès pageant
- Art exhibition and artist market
- Storytelling and poetry Fiesta
- Kwéyòl Music Fiesta
Through the efforts of the FRC, the Kwéyòl language is being celebrated as a significant aspect of St. Lucian intangible cultural heritage.
