December Birthstones: Tanzanite, Zircon & Turquoise

"tanzanite and diamonds"

A birthstone is associated with each month of the year. Various myths and legends refer to the birthstones’ healing powers and therapeutic effects. However, in modern times, it makes the selection of jewellery much simpler when personalizing a gift.

For those born in December, there are three choices of birthstone -tanzanite, zircon and turquoise.

Firstly, Tanzanite is a stunning rich violet-blue gemstone, mined in a small area at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro in the Manyara Region of Northern Tanzania.

Its colours range from exotic velvety blue to deep purple.

Tanzanite has become one of today’s most popular blue gemstones, less expensive than sapphire, it has established itself for its own brilliance and uniqueness as opposed to a substitute for a sapphire.

Secondly, Zircon, the most popular colour is bright aqua blue like the Caribbean Sea. This gem is also available in tones of green, dark red (most prized colour), yellow, orange and brown.

It is said that this gemstone brings pain relief along with prosperity and promotes wisdom and honour to its owner.

Over the past decades, the colourless zircon has been used to imitate diamonds.

Thirdly, Turquoise, with colours ranging from the light to dark blue, and transparency from translucent to opaque.

Turquoise may contain a matrix of narrow veins of brown, black, yellowish-brown, which give the appearance of a spider web.

It’s one of the oldest known gemstones, dating back to the Egyptian Pharaohs and worn by Native Americans as part of their ceremonial dress.

This stunning gemstone has been attributed to healing powers, protection from evil and bringing good luck.
