Fiesta de Carnaval
Fiesta de Carnaval takes place in the town of San Pedro, on the Island of Ambergris Caye, Belize. Each year the festivities begin on the weekend before Fat Tuesday, leading up to Lent. This year, as Fat Tuesday falls on 13th February, this lively event will take place on Saturday 27th February.
The period of Lent lasts 40 days, so locals use this festival as an excuse to go wild. Singing, dancing, parades and flour fights fill the streets of San Pedro during this ecstatic ad exciting fiesta. This day traditionally kicks off week-long festivities that bring the city to life.
The town of San Pedro is located on Ambergris Caye which is part of the Belize district. Many local companies offer charter boats to and from the island from several areas in mainland Belize. Boat rides can be anywhere between 45 minutes to two hours. You can also take a flight which is shorter – approximately 15 minutes.
If this is your fist carnival, be sure to leave behind your best clothes or anything of value that you can’t afford to lose; most likely, you will be covered in flour, water and paint during the wild week of Carnaval. Be prepared to relax and enjoy all the fun this event has to offer.
