How Artists Fail At Social Media

artistfailedsocialmedia

At Yello, we support all art initiatives and local artists in several ways. While some artists have tried to create a presence and a following using social media, after some time, they are often discouraged by the results. However, it is important to remember that social media takes consistency in order to achieve any meaningful results.

It is not enough to just post pictures of your work but you also have to delve a little deeper in the meaning behind the art. Your content should be relevant and interesting.  Artists should leverage their connections in providing value to their social media platforms. The following are few ways in which artists fail at social media.

Profile is not filled out completely

If followers have to guess or search for your information, they won’t make the effort. They will just move on to the next artist. Your profile is an introduction to you, your work and other places they can find your work, e.g. your website

We can help you set up websites as well as a free creative listing on Yello’s mobile app.

 Posting unrelated subject

If you are a food stylist and suddenly you start posting about how to build a house do you think your followers will be confused? Posting on subject matters that are unrelated to you and your followers’ mutual interests will turn them off. Stay on topic.

Follow other artists

Reciprocation on social media goes a long way. Follow like -minded artists, mentors, galleries, and institutions. Leave comments on their pages. You will get some cross pollination when their followers start following you. Be genuine in your following, interactions, and posts or otherwise it will look too spammy.

Be nice

If you are combative and rude in your interactions and posts, it sends the wrong message about you. Not everyone is going to like your art and some people will tell you so in a public forum. Think of your social media interactions as a form of customer service. Treat everyone who leaves a comment respectfully, even if they have been negative. Remember, you are the gatekeeper and you can delete negative comments and block trolls.

Sell, sell, sell

If all you do is sell and advertise your products, you will look like a spammer in disguise. Think about how your posts will enrich, enhance and improve your business. Think about it this way, if you were at a cocktail party and approached everyone in there with an item for sale, it would come off as being rude and offensive. The same holds true online. People need to get to know you before considering to buy from you. Try to put some personal information on your timeline. You decide what to share and how far you will go personally. Let people know who you are.

The reason it is called “social” media is because the platforms are designed to be active and engaging while consistently providing relevant and valuable information. Once this is achieved consistently, your followers will grow and attract more loyal, high-quality followers.
