How to Leverage Your Business During the Hurricane Season

We are officially in the hurricane season. And while we all hope that it remains a relatively quiet and uneventful season, unfortunately, that is not always the case. And while the most important goal is to ensure the safety of everyone, there are ways that you, as a business, can leverage the season.

  1. Hurricane Themed Promotions – One of the simplest yet most effective ways to leverage any season or event for your business, is to have a themed-promotion. Because really, who doesn’t love a sale, especially on items that one needs? Supermarkets and grocery stores can offer special discounts on hurricane season item checklists, e.g. perishable goods, water, etc. Own a construction company or convenience store, then offer discounts on building supplies, lumber for boarding up windows, etc.


  1. Offer Services – Another very effective themed-promotion is to offer your services, if you are in the service industry, at a discounted price. Are you roofer, offer to service individuals’ roofs and ensure it is ready for the season, at a discounted price. Similarly, are you a gardener and own a gardening business, then offer to trim and cut trees around individuals’ home at a reduced cost, in preparation for the season.


  1. Keep Customers Informed – It’s not always about the hard sell. Just being helpful can help increase customer loyalty and appreciation, which helps your business in the long run. One way to achieve this is by keeping your customers informed throughout the season and providing helpful advice and tips. Use email marketing to send your customers a checklist of things they will need for the season and the ways to prepare. Use social media to keep them updated on safety tips, reminders, etc.


  1. Give Back – Another great way to avoid the hard sell that will reap great rewards for your business is to give back. Statistics show that individuals, predominantly millennials, tend to be more loyal and trusting of businesses that exhibit social responsibility and interest in their community and the world and not just making a profit. There are many ways to achieve this last step throughout the season, both during and after. For example, partner with a non-profit and/or disaster relief organization to help keep individuals informed during and after a storm or hurricane, provide a donation to the organization, help in any fundraiser that may arise, possibly in the aftermath of a hurricane or storm. Your association with the organization will yield positive coverage and brand awareness and increase your credibility.
