Let’s meet: Alicia Trotman
Job: Sales Assistant
Which parish are you from? St Michael
Why do you want to be Miss Universe Barbados?
I think this is a great opportunity to represent my country and have the experience of travelling and getting to meet the other delegates from around the world. I also want the opportunity to speak about issues affecting young people of today, such as poverty and the advantages and disadvantages of using social media.
Do you have previous beauty pageant experience?
Yes, I am the former queen of the Holetown festival.
What has your preparation schedule been like?
We’ve had training in personal branding, public speaking, how to walk and there’s been constant preparation before the show.
What have you enjoyed most so far about the experience?
So far I’ve enjoyed the public speaking and learning about the ‘dos and don’ts’ in terms of interacting with people with Gaynelle Marshall.
Who has been your biggest supporter throughout this process?
Definitely, my mother because she encourages me every day, any funds that I need she helps me with, and anything that I call on her to do she is there for me.
What’s the best thing about living in Barbados?
Sun, sea and sand, the food and the people. I also love the atmosphere and the fact that we have so many different activities and festivals like Oistins, Holetown, polo, food and rum so there’s always something to do.
What’s your favourite activity when you have time off?
I try to spend time off with my family or I volunteer with the National Council of Youth. I also enjoy playing monopoly.
Name three things you can’t live without?
Family, cereal especially cinnamon toast and water.
Who is your main role model?
(Actress) Taraji P. Henson. I love her go-getting drive and the fact that she never gives up and I want to have those qualities because sometimes I know what I want but I can be lackadaisical about it. So I like her drive and the effort she puts in which shows that once you give something your all, you definitely will succeed, so it’s just a matter of keep trying and not giving up.
What’s the biggest lesson you have learnt from life so far?
I live with the philosophy in life that ‘if you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything’ and that has been driving me for most of my life. Just know your worth and give it your all.
What’s one thing you would change about the world and why?
There are so many things but I think it starts with you. If you be the change you want to be in the world and you share it with others, they will gravitate towards you, and add on their change as well.
