My Anguilla: Alexis S. Ryan
Meet Alexis S. Ryan, he is a fashion designer, poet, pageant trainer, a track and field coach, and a full time Anguillan public service employee. This busy man is one half of a dynamic fashion designing duo, with his mother, Marilyn Ryan. Together, mother and son, created TheoChris Designs. Today we learn about Alexis Ryan’s Anguilla.
Describe Anguilla in three words.
Tranquil, paradise, home.
Which area are you from?
North side of The Valley.
What is your favourite childhood memory?
My favourite childhood memory would be when we attended the local primary school’s sports day – an athletic event and fashion spectacle.
What was your favourite subject in high school?
My favourite subject was Food and Nutrition.
What two words best describe the TheoChris Designs brand?
Describe your design and creative process.
My design process is simple, basically I am inspired by the fabrics I choose. This may sound a bit weird but I often talk to the fabrics and then I just go with the flow of what I am feeling at the time, which is usually optimistic. I start sketching and a masterpiece evolved from paper and then it later brought to life.
What is your favourite traditional dish?
My favourite traditional dish is corn soup with sugar.
Which local activist/personality do you admire the most, and why?
The local personality I admire the most in Anguilla is Josveek Huligar. He provides platforms for local talent to be showcased. He has coordinated the Anguilla Fashion Expo, The Underground Poetry showcases and the Jouvert in July. Through his social media, Mr Huligar, keeps us up to date on current issues and events. He is a tourism entity unto his own.
What is your favourite restaurant?
My favourite restaurant is Straw Hat. The staff is extraordinary, especially Armel, so your dining experience will be memorable and the food is really good.
What major developments would you like to see happen in Anguilla in the next 20 years?
Over the next 20 years, I would like to see some projects come on stream where our tourism products can be enhanced and employment can be provided for our young people. I would also like to see a track and field facility and an indoor sporting facility on the island. We are small in size and population, but we produce some of the world’s best athletes. Lastly, I would like to see a performing arts centre where artists can have a home to display their craft.
Where would you recommend as a ‘must go’ to a first time visitor to Anguilla?
I would recommend dining at Straw Hat.
Where do you go to kick back and relax with family and friends?
At Sandy Ground, whether it is in the daytime at the beach, or the nighttime, they have amazing beach parties.
