My Grenada: Richardo Keens-Douglas

Richardo Keens-Douglas is a man of many talents. This internationally known storyteller has penned a number of children’s tales exploring the Caribbean experience. He acted in a number of stage productions as well as films including Zero Patience. A former host of the CBC Radio programme Cloud 9, Keens-Douglas has won awards and acclaim for his work as an actor, writer and storyteller. No two people see or experience life on the ‘Spice Island’ in the same way, let’s take a look at the Nutmeg Princess author’s Grenada.

Fried chicken or jerk chicken?

Neither. Fried chicken is too greasy and jerk chicken too jerky, too spicy, I love homemade pineapple chicken.

Which do you prefer, Grand Anse Beach or Annandale Waterfall and why?

I like them both. It’s very hard to choose, because they are so different. But, for the best experience, go to Annandale first and swim in the falls, and then, go to Grand Anse on the same day. It’s really the best of the two worlds.

Oil down on Independence Day or all year round?

Hmmm…No special time, when the breadfruit spirit moves me, I will eat oil down.

What’s your favourite local dish to dig into and why?

A good green peas soup, “ah just love it” and it also brings back wonderful memories of family sitting around with a good bowl of pea soup and talking.

When you take a relaxing ‘stay-cation’ where in Grenada do you head to?

On my veranda in my house, the view and beauty is enough for me.

If you had to recommend one place for a foreigner to visit, where would it be?

Grand Etang Lake. The beauty, mystery and the feeling you get there is magical. It’s also the home of the Nutmeg Princess who lives on the lake, but the only way you will be able to see her is if you have a good heart.

What’s the best restaurant you’ve eaten at on the island?

Coconut Beach Restaurant on Grand Anse Beach.

Tell us your favourite traditional Grenadian dessert?

Fried bananas in rum with ice cream poured over it.

Where do you go to get your hair groomed?

A Barber Shine in Paddock, and when I had more hair Salon Success.

What do you do to pamper yourself and where?

A day at the beach.

Which local figure do you look up to?

My parents.

Which gym do you go to, to keep in shape?

Body Image.

As a child which game did you prefer, rounders or Chinese skip?

Rounders I played a few times. The only Chinese game I play is with my mouth, when I am eating Chinese food.

Fort Frederick or Fort George?

Fort Frederick.

What’s the best thing about life in Grenada?

Everything is good about life in Grenada.
