My St. Lucia: Juelle P Cadette

Juelle Cadette is an emerging St. Lucian fiction writer, she is passionate storyteller who has published eight short stories. Juelle is currently compiling her first anthology entitled, Dark Spaces. Juelle shares what she loves most about St. Lucia in this week’s My St.Lucia.

Describe St. Lucia in three words.

Romantic, picturesque, quaint.

What is your favourite St. Lucian traditional dish, and why?

Green fig and saltfish. It is our national dish and I don’t want to sound cliché but there’s something very comforting about it, especially when eating cucumber salad and a cold glass of lime juice with banana essence.

What is your favourite childhood memory?

I’ve always been the ringleader among my friends. I remember encouraging my neighbourhood friend at the time to pick my other neighbour’s green passion fruits so we could play cricket on my step. We broke a few things.  It was always fun.

Where did you attend high school?

Entrepot Secondary School.

What was your favourite subject in high school?

I was a science freak and I seriously thought that I would save the world and my favourite subject was Biology.

What is your favourite book?

A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

What is your favourite restaurant?

Blue Olive Restaurant and Wine Bar. I order the Salmon and Dill Tagliatelle every time. And the Rituals Sushi comes in at a very, very close second.

What is your favourite music?

I love classical music which I listen to while I am studying or just to pass the time. My favourites are Moonlight Sonata from Beethoven, The Four Seasons from Vivaldi and the Prelude Op. 28 No. 4 in E minor from Chopin. There is something sad but equally passionate and beautiful about it. It is hard not to love it once you sit and listen.

What is your favourite time of year?

Summer, because that is also when I have my birthday.

Which local activist/personality do you admire the most, and why?

I’m torn between two people, Tevin Shepherd and Darren Sammy. They are both representing for their country and they are committed to encouraging the youth. And, I’m very happy that they are remaining committed to putting St. Lucia on the map.

What major developments would you like to see happen in St. Lucia in the next 20 years?

I’m a writer so I would love for the artistic community to finally achieve the respect and recognition that it deserves. I would like to see flourishing art programmes and art taking centre stage at different festivals across the island.

Where would you recommend as a must go to a first time visitor to St. Lucia?

Soufriére. It is my favourite place in St. Lucia and it is filled with so much history and authenticity.

Considering a staycation, where in St. Lucia is your favourite place to unwind and recharge?

I’m a big fan of boutique hotels, so it would have to be somewhere rustic. My top two are Fond Doux and Crystals.
