See What Your Competitors Are Doing Online
There is a lot a business owner can learn from its competitors, including what may work for them but not work for your business, how your business stands out differently from theirs, etc. Here are few tips to know what your competitors are doing online.
- Competitive Website Audit – Conduct a brief audit of your competitor’s website. Make note of any specific holidays-themed content, themes, promotions and more. Did they change the look of their page, add links to promotional items, holiday deals, etc.? Make note of the website’s ease of use or lack thereof, navigation tools, etc. Also, make note of the SEO structure of your competitor’s website and how their keywords and search terms were used. For example, are they in the website URL, page links, page titles, content, etc?
- Organic Presence – Conduct an organic search to find out what individuals find when they search for your competitor versus your company. Use a tool like Google Adwords to also see what keywords are working and not working for your competitors, which will help you in your own SEM and SEO efforts. Also, use tools like Google Alert that monitors mentions online. You can monitor what’s being said about your competitors and what keywords are being used to search for them, as well as find them online. - Competitor Social Media Audit – Like their website, it is important to do an audit of your competitors’ social media. What type of information are they posting, how often are they updating, what is the look and design of each channel, are there any channels being used more than others, how are the channels integrated across their other online channels, such as their website. Make note of the types of posts getting the most engagement and reach, how paid versus organic posts are utilized, the types of promotions being done, etc.
