On February 22nd St Lucia will be celebrating 39 years of independence.

Independence Day is a national holiday on the island and is marked with several events which are taking place between January 31st and March 26th including parades, a beauty pageant, and several sports tournaments.

This year, the theme for the celebration is the same as 2017 – ‘I am St Lucia’.

Key events include the week of February 18th-24th which has been officially designated as National Colours Week with citizens at work, home and school being encouraged to show their patriotism by wearing yellow, black, blue and white clothing.

On February 16th one of the most eagerly-anticipated activities will be the Miss Independence Beauty Pageant at the National Cultural Centre. Nine women will represent the island’s various constituency councils in five segments; swimwear, talent, costume, evening wear, and interview.

The ‘Prayer, Praise and Worship Celebration’ will be held for a second year but this time it will take place over two days on February 17th and 18th.

On February 22nd official events from the Ministry of Tourism will start at 8am with a military parade by the Royal St Lucia Police Force at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, where the guard will be inspected by the Governor General and Prime Minister Allen Chastanet.

The parade will be followed by the ‘Best of St Lucia’ celebrations which will continue throughout the day and into the early hours of February 23rd.

On launching the calendar of Independence events, Senator Fortuna Belrose, Minister for Culture, said: “Our nation is 39 and it is indeed a unique occasion for us. We will never again be thirty-nine, so we must reflect on the occasion and celebrate how far we have come.”
