Valentine’s Day Cup Model Sailboat Races
The 18th annual Valentine’s Day Cup Model Sailboat Races Festival will be held at Bambarra beach on Middle Caicos on Saturday 17th February. This thrilling and exciting featured event will begin at 11am and continue until 4pm
Turks and Caicos boasts a long history of boat races. It all began in the year 2000, when Daniel O. Forbes, of Bambarra, Middle Caicos, decided he wanted to bring back the traditional sport of his childhood, racing hand carved gum-elemi model sailboats.
In 2018 there will be four race classes: Premiers Cup Challenge (Class A: big boats), Ladies League, Class B (medium boats) and, new this year, the Sweetheart Race, for couples. Everyone is encouraged to sign up and try their hand at racing in any class. The boats are there to be enjoyed by all and the food served on the beach will be tempting and delicious. There will also be live music, games and fun for all ages.
To keep this tradition alive, model boats are available for sale or by donation to the fleet by sponsors. To date, over 200 boats have been hand carved, raced and sold. The support of the many individuals and companies that buy boats, race boats, care for the boats and stay involved is gratefully acknowledged.
Come out for this Valentine’s themed event and spend time with your loved ones.
