Most people love summer for water adventures and other fun excursions. However, pesky illnesses common during the season can sometimes dampen summer fun. Let’s look at five typical ailments for this summer and how to stay healthy.

Dehydration

Fluid loss through urination and perspiration can deplete the body of water needed to sustain it. When your body is on the verge of dehydration, you might experience headaches, urinate often, feel disoriented, or be constantly thirsty. You may also notice that your urine has a dark hue.

Tip: Watermelon, mangoes, papayas, and grapes can help replenish your body’s water supply. You can also drink green coconut water or potable tap water frequently.

The Flu

While influenza viruses are prevalent in cold weather, they can also cause summer flu. Temperature shifts from a cool indoor to a hot outdoor (and vice versa), and sudden downpours can cause some people to develop respiratory illnesses, including a cold or cough. Muscle aches, fever, and headache are typical flu symptoms.

Tip: Adequate fluid intake, antiviral medications, and bed rest can help alleviate flu symptoms.

Food Poisoning

Some people cook or eat outside during the summer. Food poisoning can occur since foodborne bacteria thrive in hot, humid environments. Someone experiencing this might vomit or have diarrhoea. You should visit your doctor if you notice blood in your stool, experience diarrhoea for more than three days, have a fever of over 101.5 °F, or experience signs of dehydration.

Tip: Hygienically and adequately prepare and store chicken, deli meats, seafood, eggs, and some fruits that can cause foodborne illnesses.

Asthma

Humidity and heat can trigger asthma symptoms, including coughing and shortness of breath. Poor air movement can trap pollutants like dust and moulds into the airways. Remaining cool during the summer’s extreme heat can help prevent asthma attacks.

Tip: To reduce heat-related attacks, people with asthma should stay in well-ventilated, clean, and relaxed environments. They should also ensure they have medication nearby in case of a sudden asthma attack.

Sunstroke

Sunstroke is a health emergency. Prolonged exposure to heat and dehydration can reduce the body’s ability to regulate internal temperature. When the body’s temperature is not controlled correctly, it can trigger sunstroke, which can harm brain cells and be life-threatening.

Tip: Ensure you remain hydrated, wear protective clothing, and sun protection, especially in sweltering and humid conditions.
