Our front cover star for the 2024/2025 Barbados phone directory is award-winning Chef Creig Greenidge (aka Chef Creig).
Chef Creig has been repping Barbados cuisine all over the world for over 15 years as a culinary ambassador for the island. This role has taken him as far as Switzerland, Egypt, Brazil, Belgium, Ireland, the UK, and the US (to name a few), where he has served up Barbados’ food and flavours via high-level competitions, cooking demonstrations, presentations, and promotions.
Despite his meteoric success, Creig remains down to earth and has not forgotten his roots in Christ Church. He credits his family kitchen with honing the skills he uses today to impress people with his creative Caribbean dishes.
He says: “At home is where I first fell in love with food. I always loved being in the kitchen from very young just helping prepare meals. Some of my favourite foods then, are still my favourites like bakes, fishcakes, and bread and two.”
Creig was about 13 when he realised that he wanted to make food into his career. He excelled in the home economics class at Christ Church Foundation School before joining the Barbados Hospitality Institute, Hotel PomMarine, where he attained an Associate of Arts degree in Culinary Arts.
While studying at PomMarine, Creig was interning at The Dining Club and after graduation he became a full-time employee. Within a few years, he had quickly worked his way up the ranks at various hotels and restaurants on the island from chef apprentice to Executive Chef.
In 2005, Creig’s fine dining talent was recognised nationally when he was named Barbados Chef of the Year in the Barbados Culinary challenge at the age of 25 - the youngest ever recipient. He would win the title again in 2007.
In 2009, Chef Creig launched his own catering business and restaurant ‘CM Catering’ and fulfilled a lifelong dream. “My business has stood the test of time and I believe my skills have developed tremendously over the years,” Creig says. “Travelling has broadened my range and I’ve even incorporated those experiences and tastes into my food alongside Bajan flavours.”
Chef Creig’s food has continued to win accolades throughout his career. In 2016, he was named the Caribbean Tourism Organisation’s (CTO) Rum & Rhythm Chef of the Year and the US Embassy Chef Challenge Winner. In 2018 and 2019 he was also the CTO’s Rum & Rhythm People’s Choice winner.
Chef Creig remains ambitious and is focused on continually improving his craft. He says his passion for food, as well as promoting the depth of Barbados’ culinary culture, will never wane. “Being able to showcase Barbadian cuisine means everything to me,” Creig states. “I absolutely love making people more aware of how wonderful our food really is.
“The three things I like most are love, happiness, and food. I love to cook, I love to see people happy, and I love to make people happy with my food.”
