Barbados will send four athletes to the upcoming 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France, the Barbados Olympic Association (BOA) Inc has announced.
The small team which consists of 400m runner Sada Williams, 100m sprinter Tristan Evelyn, triathlete Matthew Wright, and 100m freestyle swimmer Jack Kirby was unveiled at a recent press conference held at the BOA’s headquarters in Wildey, St Michael.
President of the BOA, Sandra Osborne, outlined how impressive it was for the four-member squad to be able to compete among 10,500 athletes worldwide. Two Barbadian athletes qualified for their events and the other two were given universality places also known as wild cards.
Ms Osborne described the journey to Paris 2024 as “demanding” and urged Barbadians all over the world to show their support to the team in whatever way they can.
She said: “Our athletes proudly wear our colours, and yes, they carry our national pride onto the field of play. They symbolise all our sporting dreams. We must, therefore, lift them up and not tear them down. The journey to Paris has been nothing if not rigorous and full of sacrifices, and they need to know that they have our unequivocal love and support.”
At the opening ceremony on Friday 26 July, Ms Williams will be Team Barbados’ female flag bearer, and Mr Kirby will be the male flag bearer.
The 33rd Summer Olympic Games will run from 26 July until 11 August 2024.
