The Caribbean Utilities Company Ltd. (CUC) currently has 193 employees, 90% of whom are Caymanian, and is structured in four divisions: Executive, Financial, Production and Transmission and Distribution. The CUC relies upon diesel generation to produce electricity for Grand Cayman.
The CUC operates the only public electrical utility in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands.
On 3 April 2008, CUC entered new Generation and Transmission & Distribution Licenses with the Cayman Islands government. Before 3 April 2008, CUC operated pursuant to a 25-year Exclusive License with the Government of the Cayman Islands under the provisions of Section 6 of The Cayman Islands Electricity Law 1974, originally dated 10 May 1966, amended 1 November 1979, and renewed for a further 25 years on 17 January 1986. CUC was first registered to the ISO 14001 environmental standard in 2004, the first and only organisation in the Cayman Islands to achieve this third-party registration. In May 2007, May 2010 and June 2013, the Company achieved re-registration to the ISO 14001:2004 standard by demonstrating our commitment to the standard's requirements and our Environmental Policy.
Excellent corporate citizenship is a responsibility CUC takes very seriously. It has led community involvement by providing voluntarism and financial support to many worthy projects. The CUC commenced operations as the only public electric utility in Grand Cayman, the largest of the three Cayman Islands, in May 1966. The company has been through many challenging and exciting periods but has kept pace with Grand Cayman's rapid development.
