In 2005, the Grenada Industrial Development Corporation established a Business Resource Centre with assistance from USAID to enhance the efficiency, innovation, and growth of existing and new enterprises in Grenada. The Centre provided basic business services such as preparing business plans, business diagnostics, and record-keeping.
In 2006, the decision was made to transform the Centre into a one-stop business support unit for the development of small businesses. The transition of the Centre was brought about through the implementation of several key initiatives. First, the merger of the Small Enterprise Development Unit of the Grenada Development Bank with the Business Resource Centre. Second, the Centre's name was from the Business Resource Centre to the Business Development Centre. Third, the service offering was expanded to include a business library and information. Fourth, technical support was provided under the Business Gateway Project to include establishing an enterprise tracking system, strengthening staff capacity, a study of the enabling environment and technical support to SMEs. Lastly, further technical support was provided under the Public Sector Modernization Project. It included enhancing the capacity of staff to provide business training, establishing a training facility, and training SMEs.
