Founded in 1993, the Southern Fishermen Association Inc represents the local fishermen of Grand Mal, St. George's.
Our institution was established out of a need for a social security programme to protect local fishermen. After an incident in which a local fisherman lost his life at sea, we realised our need for an association to provide for the immediate and long-term needs of our loved ones in the event of an incident.
This unfortunate event revealed to us the vulnerability and perishable nature of the persons choosing the occupation of fishing. Moreover, a profession recognised by the United Nations and most recently by the United States of America as one of the most dangerous on earth.
In 1999, as the Southern Fishermen Association Inc., we began our fish processing operations. Today, we operate out of a newly constructed HACCP-approved facility at Grand Mal, St. George's.
We export to various countries internationally. We ship yellowfin tuna to the United States and Canada, with the UK a potential market.
Also, we supply the local market with fresh and frozen fish, salted and smoked fish, and packaged flying fish filets. Our products are sold to hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, and shops.
Additionally, we are now introducing a bacon substitute made from smoked fish as an addition to our products.
We remain a sustainable and manageable fisheries resource at the Southern Fishermen Association.
