The Southern Fishermen Association, an organization formed in 1993 to give representation to the to the local fishermen of Grand Mal, St. George’s, Grenada.
The formation of this body came about because of an incident when a local fisherman unfortunately lost his life at sea. His comrades realizing for the first time how vulnerable they were not having any social security programme in place to meet the immediate and long term needs of their loved ones if indeed an incident should occur. This unfortunate incident revealed to us the vulnerability and perishable nature of the persons choosing to become involved in the occupation of fishing.
(Recognized by the United Nation and most recently by the United States of America, as one of the most dangerous occupations on earth).
In 1996 we have registered a company Southern Fishermen Association Inc. and began fish processing operation in the year 1999. We are presently operating out of a newly constructed HACCP approved facility located at Grand Mal, St. George’s.
Our exports are Yellow fin tuna to the United States and Canada and are viewing the UK as a potential destination.
We serve the local marketplace with Fresh, Frozen, Salted Fish, Smoked Fish, Packaged Flying Fish filet that is sold to Hotels, Restaurants, Supermarkets and Shops. We are now in the process of introducing a bacon substitute made from smoke fish as an addition to the already mentioned list of activities. We provide employment for (10) full-time and (3) part-time persons and it is our intention to employ all the part-time persons to a full-time position as soon as the added process is completed.
