Shortwood Teachers' College was founded in 1885. Throughout the years, the college offered programmes that prepare students to teach in early childhood, primary and secondary level education. In August 2000, the primary education programme was discontinued. Shortwood is also the only teachers' college that trains French and Spanish teachers.
Traditionally a training institution for women only, in August 2001, the College accepted the first group of male students. The College has gone beyond offering a three-year diploma in teaching.
Presently, through collaboration with the University of the West Indies and with support from the Ministry of Education, there are bachelor's degree programmes in Early Childhood and Secondary Education.
In August 2000, the master's degree programme in Early Childhood Education was offered jointly by the College and the University of South Florida. The College maintains a high standard of academic performance and discipline.
Shortwood Teachers' College offers a Bachelor of Education in Teaching (four years full-time) with specialisations in Early Childhood Education, Secondary Education, Geography/History, Human Ecology, English Language and Literature, Mathematics Education and Modern Languages (French and Spanish).
