Dr Destang has dedicated nearly 30 years to the field of dentistry, with over 20 years exclusively in the field of orthodontics. She received her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree in 1995 from the University of the West Indies in Trinidad & Tobago. She earned honours in orthodontics, restorative dentistry, prosthodontics, ethics, and jurisprudence. Even before deciding to choose orthodontics as a final speciality, Dr Destang underwent rigorous training in Oral & Maxillofacial surgery, so she truly understands the intricacies of complex head and neck anatomy and surgery.
Her training at UWI included a 3-year course in medicine, with exams which ensured that she completed the medical curriculum and has the equivalent qualifications of the MB (Bachelor of Medicine) part of the MBBS medical degree. While practising her dentistry, she also pursued a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of the West Indies in Trinidad & Tobago. She obtained her MBA with a major in marketing and a minor in finance in 1998. She then continued her studies at the world-renowned University of Glasgow Dental School & Hospital in Scotland, where she obtained her Master of Science in Orthodontics in 2001.
Her orthodontic research at Glasgow University has been highly regarded, with publications featured in three of the world's leading orthodontic and dental journals. Her thesis, "Maxillary retention: is longer better?" has been cited by several authors and supports Dr Destang's advocacy of permanent retention to maximise long-term orthodontic stability.

Dr Destang is also highly committed to ensuring that she stays ahead in her field by attending professional meetings with other top orthodontists worldwide. Her orthodontic expertise involves the use of all modern techniques such as straight wire, tip-edge, pre-adjusted edgewise, functional appliances, self-ligating appliances, lingual braces, a wide variety of removable braces, Invisalign® and orthodontic implants.
Furthermore, she is a member of the World Orthodontic Society, The American Association of Orthodontists and The World Lingual Orthodontic Society. She is also certified in the use of Invisalign®, lingual (behind the teeth) braces, and orthodontic implants.
