Get Ready for Easter with These Five Interesting Facts

Easter is almost here, and many people are getting ready for activities to celebrate the occasion. Activities like attending church services, egg hunts, kite making, and kite flying occur during the holiday. If you have ever wondered about some of the activities associated with Easter, we have some facts that might surprise you.

Interesting Easter facts.

Easter is a Christian festival.

Easter (Pascha) is a religious holiday with activities starting with Lent and ending with Holy Week. Some activities during Holy Week include Holy Thursday, celebrating the Last Supper, Good Friday (crucifixion), and Easter Sunday (resurrection).

Some people have work on Good Friday.

Italy, the Republic of Ireland, and the United States are among the countries that do not acknowledge it as a public or federal holiday. While Good Friday is a public or federal holiday in some countries with a strong Christian tradition, it is a holiday in only 12 states.

The Easter Bunny and Easter eggs are folklore.

Some believe the Easter Bunny originated in Germany and was taken to America in the 1700s by German immigrants. During the Middle Ages in Germany, hares and eggs were fertility signs. The folklore featured a hare carrying a basket of coloured eggs and giving candy or gifts to children. Over time, the custom became popular, using sweets, chocolate, and other treats in decorated baskets to replace nests.

Chocolate is popular during Easter.

Eating chocolate is a relatively new tradition that helps to boost chocolate commerce during Easter. The Easter Bunny and Easter eggs also help to promote chocolate consumption during the holiday.

Moon observations help with deciding Easter dates.

Easter changes each year based on moon observations. The date for Easter typically coincides with the first full moon (Paschal full moon) after the spring equinox. Easter (Christian) is on Sunday, 21 March 2024. Eastern Orthodox churches use the Julian calendar and celebrate Easter on a different day.
