A common problem that some men face is erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence.

According to the Urology Care Foundation (UCF), “Erectile dysfunction is defined as trouble getting or keeping an erection that’s firm enough for sex.”

ED affects millions of men globally. Its causes are many and it can be an indicator of other health problems. An underlying health issue may be cardiovascular disease.

Within the Caribbean context, it is somewhat unlikely that men experiencing ED will speak to their spouses about it. The culture of the space celebrates sexuality, sexual prowess in the bedroom and sexual conquests.

The UCF also noted that men with ED are at risk of getting circulatory problems, heart attack and stroke. As such, men who are exhibiting symptoms of ED are urged to speak with their doctor or a urologist.

Let’s look at what some of the symptoms, causes are and how ED can be treated.

The symptoms of ED may include a persistent lack of sexual desire, prolonged inability to sustain an erection or constant difficulty getting an erection.

The causes of ED can be psychological and physical. Below are a few examples of both.

Psychological causes:

  • Relationship problems.
  • Anger
  • Mental health conditions, anxiety or depression.
  • Stress.
  • Poor self-image.
  • Constantly worrying about sexual performance.

Physical causes:

  • Hypertension, high cholesterol and heart disease.
  • Atherosclerosis (clogged blood vessels).
  • Diabetes.
  • Obesity.
  • Surgery and injuries to the lower abdomen, pelvic area or spinal cord.
  • Drugs used to treat other medical conditions.
  • Sleep disorders.
  • Substance abuse (drug use, alcoholism).

Your doctor will diagnose ED and recommend a course of treatment after conducting an examination with you. Additional tests may be done, and a recommendation made for you to see a specialist if needed.

The cause of your ED will determine the course of treatment that you receive. Treatment may involve counselling, medication, the use of a penis pump, surgery, implants, alternative medicines, etc.

Living with ED can cause depression, feelings of low self-esteem and create problems in your relationship with your partner.

Preventive measures involve living a healthy lifestyle that has a nutritious diet, exercise, regular check-ups and screening, and avoiding drugs and alcohol. Also, ensure that you manage any existing health condition.
