Antigua Carnival 2022

Antigua and Barbuda’s scaled-down carnival is on track to return from July to August 2022 under the theme “Experience Greatness – Again!”.

During the official launch at the historic Dow’s Hill Interpretation Centre, Dr Michael Browne, minister with responsibility for festivals, said “50 countries across the world celebrate carnival, but there is none like the ‘Greatest Summer Festival’ – Antigua’s carnival.”

Antigua is one of just a few Caribbean countries planning to host an in-person carnival this year after a two-year hiatus because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr Browne added: “Putting on carnival this year has been a challenge and it has been a challenge primarily because we still wonder is COVID gone? Is it going? Is it coming back?…On behalf of the Ministry of Health and the government of Antigua and Barbuda, I do encourage you to take all the necessary precautions that you can, to keep yourself safe.”

Speaking a few days later at a ‘Taste of Antigua Carnival’ event in Trinidad, Roger Perry, marketing and public relations manager at the Antigua and Barbuda Ministry of Creative Industries and Innovation, promised carnival partygoers “a rich, cultural experience.”

He revealed that the 2022 event will feature “new routes, new events, and more mechanisms in place for crowd control, to ensure a safe and responsible enjoying of our festivities.”

Charmaine Spencer, sales and marketing consultant for Latin America and the Caribbean at the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority, further stated: “With protocols that allow for both the vaccinated and unvaccinated to travel, we are preparing for a boost to the 2022 summer season that will rival our 2019 figures.”

Antigua and Barbuda’s carnival will open on 27 July and last for seven days.

Some of the main events to look out for include the Panorama competition, the Calypso Monarch competition, J’ouvert, Carnival Monday, and the Parade of the Bands and Last Lap on 2 August.
