Wherever we are, it’s the one thing that has become quite common of late: long lines.

Even as we try to adhere to the measures our governments have put in place, we must admit some experiences have altered.

Shopping, banking and doctor visits are a few experiences that quickly come to mind.  In many countries, not only are there restrictions on movement but what we can accomplish and how we conduct ourselves has changed.

For some, there is now specific days allocated for shopping; reduced banking services offered and strict adherence to social distancing.  An off-shoot of these measures, though they are necessary, has been longer hours queuing.

Unfortunately, at present, the long lines cannot be helped.  So, we’ve compiled a list of items you should have to make your waiting experience more bearable.

Here are 10 essential items for braving the fatigue of long lines.

A portable charger. Don’t leave home without it.  Although it’s best to ensure your phone is adequately charged before you go off, chances are you may have to make or receive a video call.  To avoid running out of charge while you’re out, keep your portable charger with you.

Water.  You have got to stay hydrated.  For supermarket queues, there is no telling how long you will have to wait, or where.  Have a bottle of water handy.  And, if you’re at the bank, it’s best to have your supply though the banks generally make water available, and are likely to ensure suitable sanitation for customers.

Scheduled medication. If you usually take scheduled medicine, and it’s not cumbersome it’s a good idea to take it with you.  While out, you can administer your medication as it’s uncertain whether you will make it back home in time.

A snack-pack.  Walk with a little bag of snacks you can munch on while you wait.  Hunger generally makes us more irritable.  Have something to eat while you wait patiently.

Sun protection.  There is no guarantee your line will be in a shaded area. Sunscreen, a hat or an umbrella are excellent ways of protecting your skin from direct sun rays.

Portable chair.  It may sound excessive, but you don’t know how long you will be queuing.  While waiting outside the establishment, having a portable chair can help ease the strain placed on your back or legs from standing.  And, as you have six feet before and behind, it’s unlikely you will be an obstruction. However, we do advise you to be conscientious.

A ‘to-do’ or grocery list. Whether it’s to the bank or the supermarket make a note beforehand of what you would like to accomplish or purchase.  You don’t want to forget.

Earphones.  While out, you may have to discuss something delicate, or friends or family may video call.  Earphones will help you maintain your privacy while out in public.

Entertainment.  Keep yourself entertained with a book or a movie downloaded to your device.  Either will help you pass the time enjoyably.

Comfortable clothing.  Don comfortable shoes and clothing—you will be happy you did.  Wear something breathable, we are in the dry season, and the weather has been particularly hot.

Hand sanitizer or wipes.  We saved this one for last because it’s undoubtedly become a custom now.  Although businesses have now made hand sanitizers available to the public upon entering their establishment, we encourage you to keep yours at hand.

We know queuing is not easy, and when it’s for long periods, it can be even more taxing.  But, let’s continue to exercise patience and tolerance.

And, if you are heading off into a queue somewhere, refer to our list before you do.  These items may help you pass the time more comfortably.
