The holidays are a time when most tend to get left behind as we load up our plates with piles sugary, fatty goodies.

It is possible to enjoy the holidays without forsaking your healthy eating goals, and without feeling deprived.

Here are some tricks and tips to help you keep eating clean during the holiday season.

• Go for a smaller plate. When you fill up a small plate, you trick your mind into thinking you’re eating more than you really are. Small plates are amazing for keeping portions under control.

• When heading out to a holiday dinner, contribute a healthy dish. Not only will you be helping out your host, you’ll also be sure that there’s something good for you on the menu.

• Load up on the good-for-you options first such as hot broth-based soup – not cream based – salad, fruit and vegetable appetisers. This will stop you from over-eating the rich foods during the main course.

• Don’t skip meals before a big holiday dinner, to ‘save up’ your calories! This will lead to you over-eating and making poor food choices.

• Before heading out, chow down on a healthy snack to get your appetite under control.

• When choosing foods at a holiday dinner, fill half your plate with low-calorie items, such as green salads and lean protein dishes. This forces you to take smaller portions of richer dishes.

• You don’t have to completely curb your cocktail enthusiasm, but choose wisely. Mixed drinks tend to be high in calories. Go for a glass of wine, a light beer or a glass of champagne – these options are lower in calories.

• Rather than giving yourself carte blanche to eat whatever dessert comes your way, stick to those that you can only get at this time of year.
