Anguillan crochet artist and designer Ava Carty is known for her stunning handcrafted products. Her company, Beweavyn, references her passion for her craft, creativity, and unique approach to her creations. A daughter of South Hill, Anguilla, Ava credits her aunt, Robina Connor, for facilitating her interest in crochet and design. Yello caught up with the enterprising 22-year-old designer to learn more about her products, inspiration, and what keeps her going during challenging times.

When did you start crocheting?

I started crocheting in 2016 by making crochet tops and hair accessories that I would wear. Since primary school, I have had a crafty thumb. So, when my aunt, Robina Connor, realised I was interested in crocheting, she decided to buy hooks and yarn for me. I’ve been addicted ever since then. She sparked my initial interest in crochet and design. She would travel from St Thomas to Anguilla to spend time with her family each Christmas, and she always had her crochet hooks and yarn with her.

What was the initial reaction to your crochet designs?

My family and friends admired the crochet tops and accessories I made for myself. They encouraged me to pursue a business that would allow me to demonstrate this unique skill. I also wanted to showcase my creations to the public on social media. So, I was motivated to start my crochet business.

Please, tell us about the products that you offer.

The products I offer include a variety of tops, bikinis, and flowers such as roses and carnations. I also design hair accessories, hats, bags, keychains, and ornaments. I am a fast learner, so I’m open to creating new projects. Our capabilities can expand when we step out of our comfort zone.

Your business caters to men and women. What are some of the products that you offer to men?

Currently, I offer durags and hats for men. I plan on introducing more products for men over time.

Where do you find inspiration to create your designs and products?

I get most of my inspiration from Pinterest, Instagram, TikTok, and things I see when I’m out and about. I love using bright colours to add energy and vibrancy to my pieces!

What has the response been like since you started the business?

From buying my products to investments and social media support to customers showing my products that they purchased to other people, the support is “unbeweavable!” I’m so grateful.

Most businesses go through a rough patch. What is one challenge you encountered and how did you handle it?

A challenge I am currently encountering is sizing due to the yarn stretch, but I combat that by having multiple fittings for outfits. As I progress, I will improve on that.

What has kept you going since you started the Beweavyn?

Every time my client receives their product, their reaction keeps me going! Genuine happiness and awe at how beautiful the product is and that I made it through crocheting.

Your online profile informs clients of a one-month timeline to complete orders. Why is this timeline significant?

My one-month timeline is significant for several reasons. I may be pursuing other projects at the time, which makes me unavailable for any edits if needed. I also need to rest my hands as I use them for many activities other than crocheting throughout the day. Finally, I create my diamonds best when not under pressure, so the one-month timeline helps ensure that clients get a product they will love.

What is the most important thing you want people to know about handcrafted products, your business, and your industry?

Handcrafted products take time, and crafters like to ensure our products are as close to perfect as they can get. Time is necessary for brainstorming, gathering materials, and making the product. Crochet, in particular, can get tedious depending on how complex the pattern is; or how large the product is. Nevertheless, we love what we do!

Please share advice that helped you that you believe might be of value to other entrepreneurs.

As an entrepreneur, you will have clients that will challenge you, but you must keep a positive mindset. A positive outlook will always outweigh the negatives. Also, never say no to a new project; allot more time for trial and error until you get it done.
