The adrenaline fuelled Sol Rally Barbados will be back zooming through the streets of the island from 4-5 June 2022, after being cancelled in 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking at a recent media launch for the revamped event, Rally Director Neil Barnardoutlined some of the changes that have been made this year. They include a major rethink of the route, the return of rallying at night, and a record entry in the growing FIA R5 class, including teenage Formula 3 Barbadian racer Zane Maloney.

Mr Barnard also revealed that so far 90 crews have provisionally registered for the event, representing Barbados and 10 other countries. There is also a record number of female participants – 21 so far.

Mr Barnard added: “Against the background of everyone recovering from the pandemic at home and overseas, I admit the entry is bigger than I had anticipated, which speaks volumes for the image our event has generated over the years.

“Our planning for 2022 started two years ago and was predicated on the pandemic and the protocols we might have had to follow, with the safety of everyone involved at the root of all our decisions. And that has been a positive. A thorough look at everything we do resulted in many changes – reducing the number of stage venues to three and using them on both days results in more efficient use of our volunteers, and makes the control of spectator areas easier, but without reducing the challenge for our competitors.”

This will be the 32nd staging of the Sol Rally Barbados event and it takes place as the Barbados Rally Club celebrates its 65th anniversary.
