Prince Charles will be in Barbados to witness the island’s historic transition to a republic.

In a statement, Clarence House said Charles had accepted an invitation from Barbados’ Prime Minister to attend the country’s celebrations, which will see the Queen removed as Head of State.

Clarence House stated: “His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales will visit Barbados to mark Barbados’s transition to a republic within the Commonwealth.

“The Prime Minister of Barbados, the Honourable Mia Amor Mottley, extended an invitation to the prince, as future head of the Commonwealth, to be guest of honour at the republic celebration events.”

The current governor-general Dame Sandra Mason has already been chosen by parliamentarians as the island’s first President. She will be sworn into office on 30 November 2021 which is Barbados’ 55th Independence Day.

Charles is likely to attend the Presidential swearing-in ceremony, although his official timetable while in Barbados has not been released yet. On Twitter, Clarence House confirmed that the Prince will undertake “a short programme of engagements” while on the island.

The Prince of Wales and his wife last visited Barbados in March 2019 while on a Caribbean tour.

Barbados’s republic celebrations have been muted because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but the Prime Minister is expected to announce a series of official events to mark the momentous occasion nearer the time.
