The Best Beaches in Barbados – Batts Rock, St James
by Karen Rollins Nov 20, 2023
Batts Rock beach in St James has a secluded and exclusive feel, as it is almost tucked away out of sight, and the turning off the main road is easy to miss.
However, once you find this small but beautiful, family-friendly beach, you’ll realise why it is considered one of the nicest on the island.
There is more than enough parking for visitors under a thicket of nearby trees. The beach itself is quite narrow but large enough for beach chairs, and tasty food and drinks are a short distance away at La Cabane beach bar.
The water at Batts Rock is ideal for swimming. The sea is usually calm, and the waves are low, although there are a few rocks along parts of the seabed so you should tread carefully when getting in and out of the water. Snorkellers will be enthralled by the fish darting in and out of the rock formations.
Children will also enjoy the nearby playground which features slides, swings, and see-saws. There are public benches, showers, and toilet facilities.
If you are feeling energetic you can take a stroll through the trees and up the path to enjoy a great view of the coast. From here you’ll also see the catamarans that frequently make their trips from Bridgetown to St James. This uphill spot is an especially great vantage point at sunset.
Once you get hungry, La Cabane offers dishes featuring fresh, locally caught fish and an array of tropical fruits and vegetables. Drinks include rum, sangria and three varieties of margaritas!
