The Best Beaches in Barbados – Brownes Beach, St Michael

Brownes Beach, Barbados

Brownes Beach is undoubtedly one of the best beaches in Barbados.

Its powdery, white sand stretches from the Bridgetown Cruise Terminal and Bridgetown Port in the north and merges with Pebbles Beach up to Needham’s Point in the south, which makes it one of the longest beaches on the island.

It also wraps around the twinkling, turquoise sea of Carlisle Bay which is a hive of activity for water enthusiasts and home to several small boats and catamarans as well as green turtles.

Although you won’t find many shaded areas or trees on Brownes, it is a popular spot for exercising and picnicking and can be particularly busy at the weekend and on bank holidays. But because the beach is so long, you won’t have any problem finding a nice place to lie down, read a book, and relax.

The azure waters lapping the shore are generally quite smooth and calm although swimmers should expect to share space with the occasional kayak, paddleboard, and jet ski. Some parts of the sea have been cordoned off for bathers to enjoy the water safely.

You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to food and drink options along Brownes as there are several bars and restaurants right on the beach and even more just a short walk away on Bay Street.

Brownes is also the location for various beach clubs such as Savvy on the Bay, Harbour Lights, The Boatyard, and Copacabana. These clubs offer entry, umbrellas, and chairs for a fee which is usually redeemable when you order food and drink.

A lifeguard is on duty at Brownes Beach but because it is such a long stretch of sand, and a busy area for water sports, you should stay aware of your surroundings especially when in the sea.

There are changing and toilet facilities in the main cark park which is situated opposite Beckles Road.
