The first quarter of the year has seen the release of several quality books. If you’re still working on that annual resolution to read more, here are a few more books to add to your list.

These are the top books for 2019 (so far).

Black Leopard, Red Wolf – Marlon James

After the success of his critically acclaimed postmodern novel, A Brief History of Seven Killings, Jamaican author Marlon James returns with a leap into the fantasy genre.

Billed as an ‘African Game of Thrones,’ Black Leopard, Red Wolf is the first book in his new Dark Star trilogy. The New York Times bestseller draws on African history and culture to tell the story of Tracker, a hunter who joins an eccentric band of characters in search of a missing boy.

American Spy – Lauren Wilkinson

Lauren Wilkinson’s debut novel follows Marie Mitchell, an African-American FBI agent tasked with taking down the charismatic Communist leader of Burkina Faso, Thomas Sankara. As she is drawn further into Sankara’s world, she finds herself beginning to admire him, leading her to question her beliefs. American Spy is an examination of race, sexuality, and politics, all wrapped into an engaging spy novel.

Gingerbread – Helen Oyeyemi

Gingerbread is the new novel by award-winning magical-realism author, Helen Oyeyemi.

The story follows mother and daughter Harriet and Perdita Lee, the keepers of a gingerbread recipe that connects them with the fantastical land of Harriet’s birth, and her childhood friend Gretel. Years later, Perdita sets out on a journey to find Gretel and discover more about her mother’s roots. The already celebrated story is a meditation on family histories and fairytales.

The Dreamers – Karen Thompson Walker

In a California college town, a mysterious virus suddenly causes victims to fall into a deep sleep. The story details the conscious and unconscious lives of those affected and follows the family members and doctors who are coping with the unexplained epidemic.

The Care and Feeding of Ravenously Hungry Girls – Anissa Gray
