How to create a vision board

Vision or mood boards are not just for people working in the interior design or fashion industry who want to pitch an idea or get their creative thoughts flowing.

Vision boards can be used by anyone, at any time, and for any project, including just putting down in words and images what you’re hoping to achieve in life.

If you think a vision board might benefit you for brainstorming or inspiration, but don’t know how to start putting one together, these tips are for you.

What is a vision board?

A vision board is a collection of images, words, ideas or objects that inspire or motivate or convey a feeling that you are trying to capture.

What are the benefits?

The benefits of building a vision board include:

  • Helping you to visualise a life target.
  • Clarifying ideas for a specific event, such as a wedding.
  • Keeping you motivated.

How do you create a vision board?

Decide which aspect of your life you want to create your vision board on.

Is it a life goal, a business idea, your next travel destination or simply inspiration for when you need a boost?

Once you have chosen your subject matter you can decide how your physical vision board will look by selecting a cork bulletin board with pins, a poster board for glued items, a journal, or sketchbook, or you can even create your board online using the popular website Pinterest.

Begin building your physical board by collecting inspirational images, objects and words from magazines, books, and newspapers or your everyday life.

At this stage the expert advice is ‘don’t hold back’ – so choose anything that appeals to you around broad themes including freedom, creativity, colours, connectivity, and motivation.

After you’ve gathered a large collection of clippings it’s time to arrange them into a cohesive vision.

Trust your instinct and keep the items that speak to you and what you are trying to visualise, while gradually eliminating anything that no longer seems to fit. Assemble the board carefully and remember to keep it ‘on message’.

Display your vision board wherever you will be able to see it regularly like your bedroom or kitchen. Take your time to analyse the board on a daily basis and see how it makes you think and feel – if anything doesn’t resonate then replace it with something else.

Remember to review the content on the board frequently and change it if necessary, and also keep looking out for new images, objects or words which appeal to you.
