It’s that time of the year again when volunteers throughout the region unite. The annual BON DOET takes place from 16 to 17 May 2025. One of the biggest regional volunteer initiatives, locally, it’s organised by the NGO Platform Bonaire in collaboration with Oranje Foods.

At the two-day event, participants serve the community while having fun. Volunteers can register individually or with family members or friends for specific tasks. Similarly, schools or businesses interested in this community outreach can join a team to undertake a particular job. For those having trouble selecting a suitable assignment, the BON DOET team are on hand to assist.

With a cross-section of projects from which to choose, volunteers may select from broad categories such as social activities, cleaning, organising, painting, gardening, decorating, and more. Typically, the tasks include but are not limited to activities like clean-up dives, refurbishing/renovating (schoolyards, youth centres, playgrounds), or swimming with seniors or disabled people.

What’s equally exciting about this programme is that it occurs throughout the Kingdom. As with previous instalments, the Netherlands, Aruba, Curaçao, St. Eustatius, Saba, and St. Maarten will run their campaigns simultaneously.

This May, it’s time to do as the American biochemist and cancer researcher Helen Marie Dyer once said: “Shape and mould the present into a future of which we can all be proud”. We can do this through volunteerism, a tangible way of voicing our care for others.

Are you interested in putting your voice into action this May? Several fun jobs are on the waiting list for would-be volunteers. Take up the charge and join the crew! Visit the BON DOET website to peruse the listing, get an overview of each project and register.
