Don't Make These Seven Common Holiday Renovation Mistakes

The upcoming holiday is a time of festivities, and for some of us, it’s also a time to execute home improvement projects. All renovation projects require careful planning, timing, and execution.

When it comes to renovating, mistakes will happen. So, we’re sharing a few common renovation mistakes that you should avoid this holiday.

Failing to create a realistic budget.

All renovation projects should include the cost of items and unexpected expenses. You should also add the fee for a contractor if you plan to use one. When planning your budget, check several hardware stores and compare prices. By comparing prices, you may find more affordable options. It is wise to add at least 20% to the expected budget to offset incidentals.

Taking the prep work for granted.

From budgeting to physically preparing the space, the prep work is crucial. If your project includes electrical work, repainting, or replacing flooring, you should start your prep now. Have a professional electrician assess electrical issues, prime walls for painting, and talk to a flooring contractor about what you will need. Starting now can save time and money.

Starting the planning process too late.

Some renovations take a longer time to complete. If you start late but need time to enjoy the holidays, speak to your contractor about postponing aspects of the project that could disrupt family time. Depending on what you want to do, it may be best to push the project until after the holidays.

Buying the wrong paint for the job.

Painting is perhaps at the top of the list for most holiday DIY projects. Many of us have an idea of the type of finish we would like, but some need help. Try matte finishes for ceilings to make them appear to recede. Use satin finishes for walls to reflect some light. Make cleaning easier by choosing semi- or high-gloss for trim. Ensure you know the quantity of paint you will need.  If you are unsure, ask the attendant at your hardware store for assistance.

Choosing trends over safety and functionality.

Modern designs are often appealing and trendy. However, some changes in design can compromise the integrity and safety of the structure. Will your updates enhance the flow of traffic through the space? Pay attention to updates that could adversely affect electrical systems and compromise functionality or safety.

Failing to hire professionals.

Some DIY projects do not need the help of professionals. However, if your renovations include changing the design of the space, or tackling electrical problems, consult a professional contractor. Interview several contractors and ask specific questions about the design plan, budget, materials, and adhering to deadlines. Be clear about what you want and compare price quotes and references. Ensure you are comfortable working with them.

Making impulsive purchases.

Avoid making impulsive purchases by sticking to your budget and what is necessary for the job. Focus on the entire project and the outcome you need. Impulsive purchases can hurt your budget and may negatively affect deadlines.
