The holidays are over, and we all collectively need a reset. We may have overindulged in sweet treats, rich foods and of course, alcoholic beverages during the Christmas season and what better way to reset than with ‘Dry January’?

What Is Dry January?

The term Dry January™ is registered by Alcohol Change UK. The group invites you to “take on 31 days alcohol-free…for a total body and mind reset.” The global campaign started in 2013.

Why Do People Participate in Dry January?

Some of the touted benefits of not drinking anything alcoholic for a month include:

  • Brighter skin.
  • Saving money that would otherwise be spent on drinking.
  • Better mornings (no pesky hangovers).
  • A calmer mind.

Success Tips for Dry January in the Cayman Islands

  1. Set realistic goals: Maybe you can’t go in 100% but perhaps aim to not drink during the workweek.
  2. Tell your friends and family about your challenge. It is good to have the support of your friends and family while you attempt to stop drinking for a month. Even consider telling your work colleagues.
  3. Find alternative activities to drinking. Try other simple and fun social engagements like games nights, movie evenings, mobile games, conversations with friends, cooking etc.
  4. Avoid triggers.
  5. Reward yourself for your progress. Consider creating a healthy reward system to help you get through each week.
  6. Be prepared for social events. Think about where you plan on hanging out this month. Maybe skip the bar on Fridays and Saturdays and find other locations to unwind.
  7. Take advantage of non-alcoholic options. There are tons of options for mocktails available. Do some research and find a drink that is satisfying and refreshing. Plus, there are now several non-alcoholic beers on the market so you can still enjoy your favourite brew.
  8. Make the most of the Cayman Islands’ natural beauty. Spend time outdoors this January and enjoy the beauty of the Cayman Islands. Read more on our Explore Cayman series to find out the best places to see and visit during weekend day trips.
  9. Find a support group. Search Dry January support near me or in the Cayman Islands online or on social media and you might find a support group near you.

What The Experience Can Reveal

According to a 2020 Harvard Health Publishing article by Matthew Solan, Dry January can reveal some potential alcohol problems. So be on the lookout for withdrawal symptoms.

“Mild symptoms include anxiety, shaky hands, headache, nausea, vomiting, sweating, and insomnia. Severe symptoms often kick in within two or three days after you stop drinking. They can include hallucinations, delirium, racing heart rate, and fever.”
