Tyson Tatum is the owner Oasis Aqua Park, a new inflatable waterpark in the George Town Harbour that’s delighting both local and visiting families.

Yello spoke to Tyson about how he started the park, and all the fun guests can expect when they visit.

Tell us a bit about your professional background and why you decided to start this business.

I used to be in the industry business. After taking a break to spend more time with family, I wanted to start a new business that had fewer overhead costs and allowed families and friends to get out and interact with each other.

Why did you choose to create an aqua park, and why did you choose this location for it?

I first thought of opening a laser tag arena, but there was a lot of overhead, so I started looking beyond that. I was driving by the Waterfront in George Town and looked over to the ocean; I started to wonder about making an inflatable waterpark. I did my research and was pleased to see that there were a few companies around that already existed. There’s nothing better than utilising your environment and enhancing someone’s experience of enjoying the marine life and watersports on such a beautiful island.

I called around to a few manufacturers until I was able to locate an awesome product for an amazing price. Once I finalised the cost of the product, I started to locate an area where it could be placed. After a few meetings in multiple locations, it was agreed that the waterfront would be the starting home of Oasis Aqua Park.

Are there any specific requirements for park guests?

We have a minimum age of six years old but will also allow a minimum height of 42 inches if the child is younger. We have a one adult (16 years and over) to three children ratio for any child nine years and younger. This encourages parents to participate with younger kids and creates memories that will last a lifetime.

What has the reception been like from park guests?

Based on kids’ feedback, the park’s highlight would be the ‘Action Tower’ which has a large slide, and ‘The Launcher’. The Launcher is a long, slightly deflated inflatable that one person will crawl their way to and wait for the person at the top of the Action Tower to jump on the other end, so the other person catapults into the air to get some real airtime. The kids will wait patiently to be launched by either a family member or by one of our certified lifeguards.

What about safety?

All our lifeguards are trained to Royal Lifesaving Society standards; training is done in-house by the aquatic coordinator of Oasis Aqua Park, who has over 30 years’ experience in aquatics and lifeguarding. All our staff has completed their Bronze Level Certification. This level of certification is recognised on an international level. No other watersports company in the Cayman Islands offer this level of experience and training to their staff, which is why we stand out. That being said, our goal is to raise more awareness on the island in hopes of having multiple lifeguards positioned on all popular beach areas in Grand Cayman.

We are open from 9am to 4pm on weekdays, and 9am to 5pm on weekends.
