One of the perks of Caribbean living is that you can fire up the grill all year round. If you’re thinking of getting your BBQ on but don’t know what to buy, check out these handy tips.

  1. The great debate: charcoal or gas?
  • Charcoal machines are cheaper than gas ones, produce that characteristic BBQ ‘smokiness’, have fewer flare-ups than gas units, but require more time to heat up.
  • Gas will allow you to start cooking quickly and generally cook more evenly than charcoal. However, the fuel (liquid natural gas or propane) is more expensive than charcoal.

  1. Be ‘materialistic’. Stainless steel is highly resistant to corrosion, but can yellow over time. Painted steel will rust if the paint is scratched or worn off. A cast-aluminium body is tough and will not rust. For propane and natural gas, stainless steel is important; cheaper materials such as aluminium or sheet metal, will start to break down relatively quickly.

  1. How often, what do you want to be able to do, and how much will you cook on it? If you just plan on grilling chicken for the occasional get-together, don’t buy a BBQ that could have been made by NASA.

  1. The grates are important.
  • Cast iron captures, retains and distribute heat best and should last for years if oiled regularly.
  • A porcelain coating stops food from sticking but is vulnerable to chipping which can lead to rust, but it doesn’t need to be oiled.
