Staying on top of world events can be a challenge, especially these days when there are so many news sources to choose from on your laptop, smartphone, radio and TV.

The term ‘fake news’ has also made many people wary of traditional news outlets and sceptical about whether the information they’re getting is 100 per cent accurate.

But don’t worry if you’re struggling to find a trusted source for your daily news fix, because we’ve pinpointed some of the most respected news outlets so you know which ones you can rely on.

The Economist

The Economist regularly features in any survey on reputable news organisations around the world.

The magazine, which “considers itself the enemy of privilege, pomposity and predictability”, says it aims to offer “authoritative insight and opinion on international news, politics, business, finance, science, technology and the connections between them.”

One of the most interesting aspects of the magazine is a lack of bylines which ensures that the coverage is anonymous, and fuels the public’s perception of a news entity that is trustworthy and not driven by ego or the need for attention.

The website publishes “all articles from The Economist print edition (including those printed only in British copies) and offers a variety of web-only content, including blogs, debates and audio/video programmes.”

Reuters

Reuters is a news agency, like Associated Press and the Press Association, which primarily provides journalists with information, interviews and data.

Reuters specialises in presenting stories which can be disseminated quickly and because its ‘clients’ are mainly people already working in the news industry, it’s focused on supplying stories with a neutral voice.

Reuters has reporters around the world and covers every area of global news or current affairs including breaking stories or long-running issues.

The Guardian

The Guardian newspaper in the UK has an undoubtedly left-wing slant, but this hasn’t stopped it from winning several well-deserved awards for its news coverage on a range of impactful national and international stories.

The website is known for journalism of the highest standard, and since the paper is run by a trust rather than a corporation, stories are usually presented in a direct and clear manner with less concern about money or clicks.

There is also a range of voices on the website who offer their opinion and insight on various topics which might otherwise be ignored by mainstream news outlets.

BBC News

The British Broadcasting Corporation is a publicly-funded news provider with a worldwide reputation for fair and unbiased news coverage.

The BBC can provide unrivalled coverage of international stories because it has journalists embedded in bureaus around the world. The corporation operates with a high degree of journalistic professionalism and all staff are required go through extensive training to ensure impartiality and objectivity.

The BBC does not usually indulge in sensationalism because it doesn’t have to rely on clickbait-heavy advertising revenue.

Al Jazeera

Al-Jazeera is a news organisation with a reputable brand despite its financial ties to the Qatari Royal Family.

The news agenda is skewed towards Middle Eastern current affairs, but some argue that this area was being neglected by mainstream news outlets especially before 9/11, which is why Al Jazeera is a necessary addition to the world of news.

While some editorial bias is inevitable due to its ownership structure, the organisation’s reporting is viewed as trustworthy and solid, and provides an undoubtedly unique perspective on important issues impacting the Middle East and the world.
