You may have heard the buzz around crystals, which have become particularly popular with some celebrities who believe they harness the power of the Earth’s elements and energy.

It is also claimed that some crystals have healing and restorative powers and can even transfer positive energy when touched or placed near the skin.

But do they really work or are they over-hyped? We’ve put together this beginner’s guide so you can decide for yourself.

What are crystals?

Crystals are minerals which formed underground, they date back to the early days of the earth, and are millions of years old.

Crystals are formed by repeating patterns of atoms and this structure is said to have helped them develop a kind of ‘energy memory’ which enables them to store different energy and properties from the sun, the moon and the oceans.

What can crystals do?

Crystal experts claim the various stones absorb, focus, detoxify, shift, direct and diffuse energy.

In terms of healing, crystals are said to have the power to bring the body back into alignment and restore a person’s mental and spiritual well-being.

How do I use them?

There’s no right or wrong way to use crystals according to experts. Some people wear them around their necks, or keep them under their pillow, and some hold them when they’re meditating.

One important aspect to remember is that crystals need cleansing at least once a week to remove any built-up stale or negative energy.

It is best to cleanse a crystal by washing it in salt water, preferably from the sea. You can also leave it outside in the sun or moonlight for a few hours or even bury it in soil for a day.

It is also advisable not to let anyone else share your crystal because each one will be in tune with you and your energy needs.

But are crystals really that special?

It’s highly debatable whether crystals can heal and transfer energy as some people suggest, but there’s no doubt that they do possess unique properties which humans have been using for centuries.

For instance, diamond bits are used in industrial saws for cutting stone blocks and ornamental stones, and synthetic crystals are in a wide range of technology including digital watches, radios and computer chips.

Quartz is also the second most common mineral found in the Earth’s crust.

Which crystal do I need?

There are hundreds of crystals which can be used for different things. Here are just a few to choose from:

Wealth and Success: Citrine and Goldstone.

Health and Performance: Bloodstone, Quantum Quattro and Que Sera.
