Drink to good health: The Benefits of Drinking Water (Part 1)

Water is one of the keys to our wellbeing. It hydrates, refreshes, purifies and helps our bodies to function optimally. 

Dr Michael Picco, in an interview with the Mayo Clinic shared that: Water is essential for good health. Water and other liquids help break down food, so that your body can absorb the nutrients.” 

His words echo the sentiments of numerous health professionals and wellness practitioners whose research add validation.  

A healthier lifestyle requires that we consume enough water, exercise and watch what we eat. We would love to share how water can be beneficial to us. See the list below. 



Often, when we are thirsty, we may already be dehydrated. When this happens, we may have lost up to 2% of our body’s water content. This can lead to cognitive impairments such as stress, forgetfulness, agitation, etc.  

Suggestion: Drink before we are thirsty. 


Headache Relief or Prevention 

Research has indicated that water can relieve headaches. However, this depends on the type of headache. While water does not reduce the frequency of the headache, it can impact the intensity and duration. 

Suggestion: If you believe that your headache is caused by water deprivation, drink some water and give it at least 30 minutes to work. 


Constipation Relief 

Low water consumption may be a contributing factor to constipation in some persons.*  

Suggestion: Several factors may cause constipation. However, drinking two to four glasses each day helps with keeping constipation at bay. 


Kidney Stones Treatment 

Kidney stones can be painful. They are often formed when urine becomes concentrated, allowing minerals to crystallise and stick together.  

Suggestion: Drink lots of water to reduce kidney stone formation. If detected early, water and painkillers can help to flush the stones out. Be sure to see a healthcare professional for expert advice. 


Weight Loss 

Water can boost our metabolic rate. It increases satiety, which can lead to less consumption of calorie, if water is had half an hour before eating a meal.  

Remember, our bodies are made up of 60% water. As such, staying hydrated could significantly reduce several health issues that are linked to dehydration.
