Eight Helpful Tips to Develop Better Habits
by Lou-Ann Jordan May 5, 2025

Making lifestyle changes, even small ones, is not easy. Building the momentum to get started and maintain progress can be gruelling. Sometimes, although you’ve done the hard work of starting, a brief pause, or a momentary falter, can inadvertently lead to you stopping altogether.
According to world-renowned neuroscientist Dr Caroline Leaf, it takes 63 days to build a new habit. Dr Leaf also says that we should not become disheartened because change takes time—lasting change, that is. Therefore, whatever transformation you may want to undergo, you’ll need to be patient to see it through.
Two watchwords that will help you achieve your goals are consistency and dedication. When these qualities are there, you stand a greater chance of attaining long-term changes.
We’ve also enlisted some advice on the topic from experts at the Body Image Health Club – they have given you eight ways to develop better habits.
- Focus on one thing. Don’t get distracted by a long list. Keep it stupid and simple. Choose one habit to work on.
- Make sure it is attainable. Nothing is more discouraging than attempting something that isn’t achievable.
- Identify and remove obstacles. There’s a reason why you haven’t been able to get started or stay committed. Make a note of it and devise a plan to resolve any foreseeable issues.
- Create an environment for success. Gather the things you’ll need to help you achieve your objective. Let’s say your goal is to begin working out. Then, get the proper attire and accessories (clothes, shoes, gym bag, water bottle, etc.); all you need to get excited about starting. Of course, it goes without saying–sign up for membership.
- Prepare for the mental fight. As humans, we instinctively try to avoid discomfort or suffering. Your mind and possibly your body will baulk at disrupting their comfort. So, be prepared to fight mental resistance. Use motivational quotes, songs, or anything that inspires you. Many people like to place quotes in visible areas. Some creative options include home wall decals, picture frames or fridge magnets.
- Celebrate your start. It doesn’t have to be elaborate. Do something small to acknowledge your start.
- Track your changes. Use a journal or whiteboard to document your growth. It will motivate you to continue and possibly begin a new habit.
- Have a plan for slip-ups. There is a chance you may slip – and this is not negative thinking – so have a plan to recapture the impetus to continue.
These tips can help you create new habits that ultimately lead to lasting lifestyle changes. Remember, “success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out”, so don’t give up. You’ll be victorious if you remain consistent and determined!
